Making Waves in Our Community!

Waikoloa Swim Team

The Waikoloa Swim Team!

Since its launch in March 2023, the Waikoloa Swim Team has become an integral part of our village’s youth programs, fostering athletic excellence, community service, and personal growth among our keiki. With 34 young swimmers aged 5-15 years old—95% of whom are children of Waikoloa Village homeowners—the team has quickly established itself as a cornerstone of our community’s recreational offerings.

The dedication of these young athletes is evident in their rigorous training schedule, with practices held three days a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:00-6:30 PM. Thanks to a generous partnership with Forever Fitness in Waikoloa, team members also benefit from weekly strength training and injury prevention sessions every Tuesday, demonstrating the program’s commitment to comprehensive athletic development.

The team’s success in the pool has been remarkable. Five swimmers have already qualified for state championships, placing them among the top 5% of competitive swimmers in Hawaii. This achievement speaks volumes about the quality of coaching and the determination of our young athletes.

However, the Waikoloa Swim Team’s impact extends far beyond the pool. Our swimmers are active community servants, recently volunteering at the Waikoloa Community Church’s Thanksgiving event, where they helped serve 250 meals to those in need. This holiday season, they’re participating in the Kupuna Angel Tree program through Salvation Army, further demonstrating their commitment to giving back to our community.

For clarity regarding the Waikoloa Aquatic Center pool usage, the team currently utilizes just two lanes during practice times, ensuring that a dedicated free swim lane always remains available for community members. We actively encourage residents to continue enjoying the pool during practice hours—swimming alongside our young athletes can be an inspiring experience! The team contributes $5,000 annually to the WVA for pool facility use, helping maintain this valuable community resource.

Parents and coaches consistently observe the program’s positive impact on our keiki. Beyond physical fitness, team membership builds confidence, teaches time management, and provides a healthy alternative to screen time. The camaraderie and sense of belonging fostered through team participation have proven invaluable for mental health and social development.

Looking ahead, the team hopes to expand its program to accommodate more practice time for competitive swimmers, reflecting their commitment to excellence while maintaining a balance with community pool access.

The Waikoloa Swim Team exemplifies the best of our community—young people working hard, supporting each other, and giving back to their neighbors. As we watch these talented athletes develop both in and out of the pool, it’s clear that investments in youth sports programs like this one strengthen the fabric of our entire community.

How can we not feel proud and excited about this remarkable team that brings such distinction and aloha spirit to our Waikoloa community?
